What is Copy Editing?

Copy editing is the first stage of editing. It's often what people are thinking of when they say "proofreading". The editor looks at the manuscript - your original document - and corrects spelling, grammar and punctuation errors, and may also improve the actual text to make it read better (although the author has the final say). The editor also looks for style or formatting problems and inconsistencies to pass on to the typesetter.

What is Typesetting?

Typesetting is the process that most of us think of as "formatting". The typesetter makes the pages of the publication ready for printing and carries out the copy editor's layout and formatting instructions.

What is Proofreading?

The proofreader is there to that no errors have crept in between copy editing and typesetting, by comparing the copy editor's final version with the one produced by the typesetters. Proof readers also look out for errors or omissions missed by the copy editor ad typesetter - we are all human and sometimes make mistakes!
